AJ Davis Park & Reserve
Design Intent
Designed by PLAYCE for the City of Moonee Valley, the AJDavis Reserve Play-space transforms a long-valued local reserve into an inclusive, nature-rich community hub. This approach invites exploration, imaginative play and everyday connection with nature, while creating a welcoming place that genuinely reflects the needs of its diverse community. AJ Davis was awarded winner of the 2025 AILA VIC Landscape Architecture Award for play spaces.
Project Delivery and Outcome
From the inception of this project, the intent was to construct a space that would strategically transform an under utilized ‘grass hill’, that lies adjacent to a scout hall and community sports field into an engaging community space for a variety of users . The final product enhances the reserve’s open character, weaving sculpted landforms, timber and boulder play features, and resilient native planting into a cohesive, engaging landscape. The methodology required detailed earthworks, draining and structural elements be built with a clear staging plan to capitalise on the sites challenging topography and make it a key feature of the park. Melbourne Landscape Group managed and collaborated with all stakeholders, consultants, key manufacturers and contractors to deliver a high quality constructed space that emphasised the design intent. The project was complemented by the ongoing maintenance and horticultural care of our grounds team, who ensured the plantings and soft landscape elements established and integrated play elements and natural habitat for the future.
Testimonials
Melbourne Landscape Group (MLG) were selected through a competitive tender process to delivery the $900k AJ Davis Reserve Play-space in Airport West in 2023. The play-space is situated on a challenging sloping site, requiring extensive earthworks, significant boulder placement, and the integration of an accessible path network throughout. MLG coordinated the supply & installation of various play elements sourced from multiple manufacturers, successfully managing the logistical & spatial complexities involved. To accommodate the significant tree & garden bed planting included in the project, MLG carefully worked around existing mature trees both adjacent to & within the site. Following practical completion and a 12-month maintenance period, the establishment of new trees & garden beds, as well as the overall condition of the play-space exceeded expectations. It stands as the best example of final handover quality I’ve seen for a project this scale. MLG’s commitment to excellence, high standards of workmanship, and proactive approach to project delivery & maintenance are a credit to their team.
