Gasworks Arts Park
Design Intent
Thoughtfully designed by Jeavons, the playground references the arts history of the former Gasworks site in a bushland setting. The playground entwines structural elements made from a variety of materials and forms designed to appeal to ages up to 11 years. Custom play items include accessible social swings, slides, interactive panels, climbing and balancing structures. There are gathering areas with both custom and standard seating & furniture, art pieces and informal play elements. The existing trees are complimented with the addition of ‘bushland’ character planting and dispersed with timber logs and rocks to provide nature play opportunities. The garden areas include sensory and accessible play elements.
Project Delivery and Outcome
The opportunity to upgrade stage one of the Gasworks Art Park was an exciting one for MLG. The scope offered a complex design of custom play elements that had been carefully engineered adjacent to a heritage brickwall that had undergone structural improvements. This, along with consideration of reducing excavation and disposal of contaminated soils below a certain surface level, meant the play elements were founded on a series of pad footings, beams and insitu concrete piers. We worked closely with all stakeholders to ensure disruption to the surrounding park, arts centre, café and museum was minimised and the future outcome added value to all. A Farmers Market is held monthly at Gasworks Park. During the works period, the market continued to operate in the plaza space adjacent to the playground site. Collaborating with Jeavons, COPP and our team of staff and contractors, Melbourne Landscape Group delivered a high quality project within strict time and budget constraints.
