Pipeline Reserve
Design Intent
Designed by Pollen Studio In collaboration with Hobsons Bay City Council, the intent was to create an all-abilities playground for all children, but specifically a safe space for children with special needs to play, explore and relax. The eproject includes a large shelter area with seating and BBQ, a multi use sports court, a natural gravel pump track and all abilities playground. This is all surrounded by native and meadow plantings. The use of natural timbers , salvaged cubby houses and vibrant colours adds to the character of the larger reserve.
Project Delivery and Outcome
HBCC’s intention was originally to deliver this project during the warmer months as it had a history of pour drainage. Unfortunately, due to some unforeseen funding delays during the evaluation period, it was awarded just before the winter months. With some specific planning and measures to mitigate delays due to foreseen inclement weather and bad soil conditions, Melbourne Landscape Group delivered this project within a tight time frame and strict budget constraints during Autumn and winter. The project included extensive earthworks, drainage, electrical works, fencing, concrete paths, a structural basketball court and associated landscape features. We ensured a high quality of workmanship throughout all treatments and were excited to hand over a space that exceeded expectations. The space offers children with special needs a secure place to explore with a series of communication boards, nature pay areas, all ability play components, sensory items and walking tracks.
