W.L.J Crofts Reserve
Design Intent
All stages of the Landscape scope were designed by Pollen Studio and included an extensive concrete path network with DDA compliant ramps and steps to link the car park, pavilion, sports oval and new playground together. The mixture of structural and natural elements allows the entire space to integrate the sports clubs and local community. The design includes planting nodes throughout the site and adjacent to the pavilion, along with tree planting for future shade and grass mounding for spectator engagement. The large play area includes nature play, sand play, all abilities equipment by Proludic and extensive furniture for resting and supervision.
Project Delivery and Outcome
Melbourne Landscape Group staged this project to allow separable portions for the play ground area and concrete path network, including associated landscape works and the overflow carpark. This allowed the sporting clubs to have continued use of all ovals, pavilion and carpark thoughout the duration of both stages. MLG had a specific site management plan that had to have a level of flexibility for the large sporting events to continue throughout the program. We worked with all stakeholders to ensure the project could be delivered without delay whilst minimizing any impact to the community or sporting clubs. The project included collaboration with Council’s irrigation, sports and parks teams to ensure the future outcome was suitable for ongoing maintenance. The playspace design included coloured concrete, sandblasted concrete, detailed rubber design and natural rock edging for the sand pit. We were able to deliver both stages of the project within the anticipated time frames and to extremely high quality. MLG’s grounds team maintained the large planting and grass areas for an extended maintenance period to ensure the highest level of horticultural care was provided, to aid in the establishment of the open space prior to handover to HBCC’s internal teams.
