MO Moran Reserve
Design Intent
The project included over 500 meters of black chain link fencing, irrigated lawn areas and protected gardens with expansive planting of locally indigenous shrubs. There are two entrances to the fenced dog area, one adjacent to Marine Parade and one adjacent to St Kilda beach foreshore. Both entrances include a large exposed aggregate concrete area with drinking fountain, bin, signage and seating. There is a gravel connection path that runs the length of the site to allow people to access and use the area during inclement weather.
Project Delivery and Outcome
The decision to construct a fenced dog off leash area on the St Kilda foreshore was a bold one by City of Port Phillip. It was met with varied response from a very engaged local community that were very passionate about disruption to the current and future use of the site and potential damage to native flora, fauna and natural habitat. During construction we engaged constructively with community members and ensured they could start to appreciate the future benefit to themselves, their community peers and the local environment. Practically, this meant a well considered environmental plan and associated control measures as well as staged construction that minimized impact to users. The end result was immediately well received and has become a staple of the community.
